There are some calamities(!) whose being good or evil is understood only later. At first, they are perceived as if they were a great evil, and despite all the vastness of the earth, there are moments when the world feels narrow to those who experience this calamity(!). The case I witnessed is exactly of this kind.

It was during the years when I was doing my residency in Edirne. I was close to finishing my specialization and had come to the final stages of my psychiatry rotation.

A Mother’s Grief

The only child of my daughter’s classroom teacher had been involved in a traffic accident while going to school, and while the child was lying on the ground covered with newspapers, the mother was informed. When the mother saw her child—over whom she had doted for so many years—in that state, she fell into a great breakdown. This incident was published at length in Edirne’s local newspapers. After this event, although the mother and father went to many psychologists and psychiatrists in order to restore their deteriorated mental health, instead of improving, they became even worse. As their condition continued to worsen, one day my daughter’s teacher sent me a message through my daughter. She told my daughter that if I was available, she wanted to meet with me urgently.

Even though we did not meet very often, my daughter’s teacher and I would occasionally get in touch to ask about my daughter’s situation. Despite having different worldly views and occasionally debating these matters, I liked her honesty and straightforwardness. As far as I knew, she was a warm, friendly, and idealistic teacher who was loved by all the students and teachers at the school. These qualities had led me to feel respect and affection for her. She was a very compassionate person who did her job well and took personal interest in her students and their problems. For this reason, despite being very busy, I conveyed through my daughter that we could meet outside working hours whenever she wished. Two days later, during the lunch break, she came to visit me at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine. When I saw her, I was momentarily very surprised. That lively, smiling, warm woman was gone; in her place stood someone with sunken cheeks, a bent back, the light in her eyes extinguished, and a vacant, frozen gaze.

After a brief exchange of greetings, without prolonging the conversation, she went straight to the point:

“Doctor, I know your time is limited. I also apologize for keeping you from your lunch. But I am very bad, doctor, very bad. You know that my daughter died as a result of a traffic accident. Because of this, I have been going to psychologists and psychiatrists for a long time, but in vain. Every psychologist I go to says things like, ‘this is the law of nature; one day we will all surely die…’ and tells me that I need to get used to this situation. And every psychiatrist gives me different antidepressant medications. I have not benefited from either psychologists or psychiatrists. I beg you, show me a way out. I am very bad, doctor; if this continues, I will go mad—please help me. I came to you as a last resort. Otherwise, I am afraid of what I might do…”

For a moment, I wanted to explain something to the person in front of me using my own references, but that could have been disrespectful to her. It might have meant taking advantage of her difficult moment and imposing my own ideas on her. Therefore, I gave up on what I had been thinking of doing.

“God forbid, Ms. Devrim. I will try to do what I can. If you wish, I can speak with one of the professors working in the Department of Psychiatry and arrange for you to see them. What do you think?”

“Do you mean Prof. …… ……..?”

“Yes, him or anyone else. If you wish, of course.”

“I went to him as well, doctor, I went to him too. He prescribed me Xanax 1 mg and Lustral 50 mg tablets. Those medications did nothing but numb me. After taking them, I just started wandering around in a daze, that’s all. Doctor, you are a devout person; I know this from your daughter. I often find myself involuntarily asking this question:

If there is God, why did He take my daughter, why doctor, why?

While there are so many thieves, scoundrels, and immoral people in the world, why didn’t He take one of them instead—why did He take my daughter? Is this justice, doctor? Whom have we harmed? Whom did my daughter ever harm, doctor?

Why my daughter?

What is she doing now under that soil? Does she feel cold in cold weather? Do you know, doctor, in cold weather I go to ‘the cemetery on Buçuk Hill’ and cover her grave with a blanket so she won’t get cold. At night, when there was lightning and thunder, she couldn’t sleep and would come to lie next to me and my husband. Now, when lightning strikes, what is she doing, I wonder? I have lost my daughter forever, doctor; I will never see my hennaed lamb, my cypress-tall one again.

How can I live with this pain?

And why should I even live? What should I live for, doctor? Please, find me a remedy. You are one of those who can understand me best. You also have a daughter; you are also a parent…”

As the grieving mother spoke, my heart was breaking. Feelings this clear and this sincere could only be expressed by a mother, and before me stood a grieving mother. Regardless of belief, I believe that the feelings mothers have for their children are universal. I believe that all the mothers of the world therefore harbor their purest, most selfless, and most sincere feelings toward their children. That is why neither an instrument nor a statistical method has been found in this world that can measure maternal compassion. Their love is not a love that can be shown or measured. A mother’s love is selfless; it contains no expectation, it is innate, not acquired later, it is sincere, it contains no hypocrisy. In short, the love they feel for their children is a love without bargaining. That is why there is no beloved like a mother. This I know…

“Ms. Devrim, from your point of view, it is very natural for you to be this upset and to feel this bad. If a person loses the being they love most in life and believes that they will never see them again, of course they cannot find a justified reason to live. But if you can look at the event from a different angle, then even if these troubles you are experiencing do not end, they will lessen, and you will be able to cope with them. Actually…”

“Wait a moment, doctor—are you implying now that I can be reunited with my daughter, but that this is not possible with my way of looking at things?”

It was clear that the person in front of me was very intelligent. However, this could be either an advantage or a disadvantage for me. This largely depended on my approach. It could be an advantage, because there was someone very intelligent before me who could understand what I meant without difficulty. It could also be a disadvantage, because there was someone before me who was very unfamiliar with what I was going to say and who did not believe in the references I believed in. With the slightest wrong word or sentence, I might not be able to convey the message I was trying to explain, the message I was trying to give. I was aware that trying to seek a solution for her through the approach style of modern(!) psychiatry would be like pouring water into a mortar. She herself was already saying that she had not benefited from this approach. In a short period of time, she had gone to almost all the psychologists and psychiatrists in Edirne. She had even been examined by …… …….., one of the professors of the Department of Psychiatry at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine, the highest authority she could turn to in Edirne. Feeling a bit uneasy and a bit hesitant, I thought of approaching her through a different channel. In fact, what I was trying to do was very risky; if she understood the example I would try to give in that moment, all the better. Because at that time, this was all my knowledge on the matter amounted to. Saying “Bismillah” to myself, I began to speak:

“Ms. Devrim, if you allow me, I would like to explain this experience you are going through and the way out of it to you through a metaphor. Or rather, I would like to read you a passage, and then we can interpret the story I read together, if you wish.”

“Of course, doctor.”

Knowing why Ms. Devrim would be coming to see me, I had brought with me the small booklet that explains The Child’s Condolence Treatise, one of the red-covered books. I took it out and, as best as my tongue could manage, I began to half read and half narrate it.

A Consolation from the Risale-i Nur Collection

“Once upon a time, a man fell into a dungeon. He had a lovable child, and they sent the child to him in the dungeon as well. That helpless man was bearing his own hardship, and at the same time he was distressed by the burden of his child, because he could not provide the child with comfort. Then a merciful Sultan sent him a messenger and addressed the man, saying: ‘This child is indeed your offspring, but he is also under my rule. I will take him and have him raised in a beautiful palace.’ Faced with his child being taken from the dungeon and brought to the palace, the man cried and grieved and insisted, saying: ‘I will not give up my child, who is my source of consolation.’ His companions said to him: ‘Your sorrow is meaningless. If you pity the child, the child will go to a palace far more comfortable than this filthy, dirty, dark dungeon. If you grieve for yourself, then if the child stays here, together with your temporary and dubious benefit, you will suffer more hardship and pain because of the child’s suffering. If he goes to the Sultan’s palace, it will bring you a thousand benefits. For it will become a means for the Sultan’s mercy; your child will intercede for you. The Sultan will let him meet with you. Surely, in order for you to meet, he will not send the child back to the dungeon; rather, he will take you out of the dungeon and send you to the palace where your child is, and let you meet your child. But he will do this on one condition: that you have trust in and obedience to the Sultan…’”

From time to time, I was checking out of the corner of my eye whether Ms. Devrim was affected by the part I was reading. But the neutral state of her face did not allow me to understand this. Probably because of the suffering she had endured, it was hardly possible to find any facial expressions on her face that indicated any emotion. While I was in these thoughts, it was time to move on to the explanation of the passage I had read:

Just as described in this story, Ms. Devrim, people whose children have died—like you—should think in this way: My deceased child is innocent. And the One who created her is Most Forgiving and Most Protective. That Being, who loves my child and shows her mercy far more than my own love and compassion, took my child to Himself. He removed her from the distressing, toilsome dungeon of this world and sent her to the highest rank of Paradise. How fortunate my child is! Had she remained in this world, who knows what hardships she would have continued to endure? …

“Wait, wait, doctor, wait a moment! Are you now saying that my child did not become soil, did not go into nothingness or nonexistence, but went to the presence of Someone who loves and protects her more than I do? So are you saying that I will be able to meet her again?”

I said to myself, “Subhanallah.” I had read this example many times, consulted dictionaries, and asked someone knowledgeable in order to understand it in the way it was meant. Yet she grasped immediately what was being meant at the very first reading.

“Yes, exactly as you said, but…”

“So will I be able to see my child again?

Will I be able to smell her and kiss her, doctor? You are not saying all this just to console me, are you?”

“Ms. Devrim, I can understand your excitement, but I am not the one saying these things. These are said by Allah, who neither deceives nor is deceived, who is the most merciful toward the servant He has created, who created you, your daughter, and me, the Lord of the worlds. However, if you pay attention to the sentence, it does not say, ‘No matter what, I will reunite you.’ This is the most important point to notice here. The One who created us ties this reunion, this meeting, to a condition.”

“What was that condition, doctor? What was the condition for seeing my daughter again?”

“If you wish, let us begin by explaining this short allegorical example, and at the end we can answer your question. Here, the dungeon corresponds to worldly life. The hardships endured in the dungeon point to the hardships of worldly life. The man sent by the Sultan is our Prophet—that is, Muhammad al-Amin, the most truthful and the most trustworthy of people. The Sultan, on the other hand, is Allah (glorified and exalted be He), the creator of the entire universe, its administrator, lawgiver, and the One who demands obedience to the laws He has set. The Sultan’s taking the child from the dungeon and placing him in the palace, allowing him to benefit from all the blessings there, points to the life of the hereafter and the blessings of Paradise. And the Sultan’s reuniting the child with the parents when the time comes points to the child’s interceding for the mother and father and being together with them in Paradise. Now let us come to the answer to the question you asked; of course, the Exalted Creator has tied all of this to a condition. And that condition is that the mother and father whose child has been taken must have absolute trust in and obedience to the Sultan—that is, to the Exalted Creator. Because God is Just. His justice acts; He does not commit injustice. He is All-Wise; all His acts are based on wisdom; He does nothing in vain. He is Most Merciful. He deals with His servants with mercy; He does not oppress…”

While I was explaining these things, I realized that Ms. Devrim had drifted off somewhere far away. Rather than what I was explaining, she had become fixated on a particular point I mentioned. This was evident in every aspect of her demeanor. At one point she paused and, in a barely audible tone, almost murmuring,

“So I can see my daughter again. But there is a condition to this, is there!

If only these things were true, if only I could believe, if only—ah, if only…”

At one point, a silence fell between us. She was clearly weighing within herself the truth of what had been told. As for me, I was praying inwardly that she would be content with what I had explained. I had only one shot, and I had used it. If she pressed further and asked questions, I had nothing in my hands other than scientific data and modern psychiatric methods. After a short while, she turned to me and said:

“Where can I obtain the book you read from? Could you write its title and author on this paper?” She took a pen and paper out of her bag.

I then extended the book I had read to her:

“Let this be my gift to you, please.”

“I absolutely cannot accept it; it is enough for you to tell me where I can find it. I have already burdened you enough…”

“Ms. Devrim, it is important for me—not for you—that you take this book, because according to my belief, giving a gift to someone is a Sunnah, that is, a practice that our Prophet frequently did and recommended. In this way, I will have fulfilled a Sunnah and earned reward in return, and you will have given me the opportunity to practice a Sunnah.”

“Oh, is that so? Well then, I will take it! Thank you very much for sparing your time for me. Most importantly, you listened to me in this state of mind without judging or condemning me. Thank you very much.”

After parting from Ms. Devrim that day, for quite a long time we did not have the opportunity to meet again. My intense on-call duties and workload had an effect on this, but the main reason was that I wanted her to call me—and indeed, that is what happened.

From Despair to Faith and Hope

About two and a half months had passed. One Saturday, while I was sitting at home, a man I learned was Ms. Devrim’s husband, Mr. Haydar, called me on the phone and said that they were expecting me for tea in the evening. I practically counted the hours until that evening. I was very curious about Ms. Devrim’s current state. The answers I received from the questions I occasionally asked my daughter did not satisfy me.

When evening came and I rang the doorbell of Ms. Devrim’s home, her husband—whom I was seeing for the first time—opened the door. Mr. Haydar invited me inside in a very modest manner. When I entered, instead of a woman whose eyes had lost their light and whose shoulders had slumped from hopelessness, I encountered a woman whose eyes were sparkling and who was self-confident. As we talked, I could see that this positive physical change in Ms. Devrim was also reflected in her state of mind. At a moment when our conversation had deepened and we were sipping our tea, Ms. Devrim said to me:

“Doctor, I want to show you something.”

We placed our tea glasses on the coffee table, and all moved together from the sitting room into the living room. It was clear that the living room was furnished very simply yet tastefully. When I saw, on the widest wall of the room, a photograph of her daughter in frames made of extremely high-quality wood, and next to it The Child’s Condolence Treatise, carefully written in neat handwriting, I suddenly became very emotional. These two frames were so large that they immediately caught the attention of anyone who entered the living room.

“Doctor, may God be pleased with you. The day I came to see you, I was at the peak of despair—pardon me, we were at the peak of despair. My husband and I had decided to commit suicide. You know Stefan Zweig—the Austrian writer of Jewish origin. He committed suicide together with his wife at the age of 61, you know. They chose suicide as a way out of the anguished life they were living. He is one of the writers my husband and I love most. And I suppose there is no need for me to mention Sigmund Freud. The famous neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis—he too committed suicide. In fact, I think he did it with the help of a doctor; I believe you call it euthanasia. After losing our daughter, we too had decided that the life we were living was utterly meaningless. And the solution, to us, was obvious of course: to get rid of this suffering. We had decided to do this just as our favorite writers had done. Where there is no hope, life consists of nothing but torment, doctor—you know that, don’t you? But that day, in the Child’s Condolence Treatise you read to me, you showed us a way to be reunited with our child, whom we thought we had lost forever and would never see again. As soon as I got home that day, I told my husband about this, and I also read to him the book you gave me as a gift. That night, for the first time, we slept until morning without nightmares, in tears—and I even saw my daughter in my dream. I cannot recall the dream in full detail, but my daughter was very cheerful in the dream.”

From that day on, every morning before going to work and after returning from work, we read this Child’s Condolence Treatise, which I wrote out by hand. While my husband and I were thinking of committing suicide in order to be reunited with our daughter eternally, you showed us that this was an eternal separation. When I asked you what the necessary condition was for reuniting with her, you told me that it was trust in and obedience to the Sultan, if you remember. While buying the book you gave me, I saw at the bookstore that the author had other books as well. I bought all of that author’s books. You probably call it a “corpus,” don’t you? The fact that my main field is philosophy made it easier for me to understand the language of these books. Within a month and a half, I read all of them. And I realized this: “Trust in the Sultan is a necessary condition for reuniting with my daughter, but it is not a sufficient condition.” After that, my husband and I discussed and reviewed what we read every evening after work. Do you know, doctor, my husband and I started praying a week ago. Trust in the Sultan then inevitably compelled us toward obedience. But please do not misunderstand this compulsion. My husband and I have long believed that “every idea has an honor, and that honor is realized only by living in accordance with what you believe.” For this reason, my husband and I made a decision a week ago and began to pray. If we were going to trust the One who created us, then we had to obey His commands as well—and that is what we did.

As Ms. Devrim was telling all this, I became emotional and could not hold back my tears. How sincerely and genuinely she was speaking. At one point she said:

“After everything we have been through, we realized that we could not stay here in Edirne, doctor. Everywhere here carries the memory of our daughter, and this inevitably hurts both me and my husband deeply. Therefore, we requested a transfer. Our transfer was approved for Burdur. God willing, we will move next month. We invited you to thank you and to ask for your forgiveness. And we also want to give you this small gift—just a humble token of appreciation.”

At first, I did not want to accept the wrapped gift that was handed to me, but when Ms. Devrim said,

“Exchanging gifts is a Sunnah, doctor—don’t forget!”

I had to accept their gift without much resistance.

When I got home, the first thing I did was open the gift package that had been given to me. Inside was a copy of The Flashes (Lemalar). On the first page, the following words were carefully written:

“We are grateful to you for introducing us to these works that changed our lives. With our most sincere feelings, to our dear doctor who taught us that the true secret of life is ‘trust and obedience.’”

Devrim–Haydar Çalışkan.

The author of this article and the doctor in the story is the late Prof. Dr. Kenan Taştan.

May his abode be Paradise.

The text titled “Child’s Condolence Treatise (Çocuk Taziyenamesi)” mentioned in this article is a passage taken from the Risale-i Nur collection by the great scholar Said Nursi, and the examples narrated by the doctor throughout the article are also taken from these works.

During challenging times, it is often difficult to remember the feeling of gratitude. Sometimes we go through truly tough periods: illnesses, financial difficulties, losses, disappointments… These circumstances can suddenly immerse us in anxiety, fear, and stress. At such moments, gratitude is often forgotten, and complaints begin.

Yet, this is entirely human; our emotions, hearts, and minds can become confused during such times. Considering the nature of what happens to us or to our friends, it is clear that these emotional, mental, and physical reactions are common. Every day, more people share their struggles and complain about their circumstances.

“Complaints is criticism of fate; and thankfulness is surrender to destiny.” Master Nursi

Understanding Life Through Divine Wisdom

In reality, the situation is often not as dire as we imagine. If we can view our experiences through the lens of destiny’s wisdom and Allah’s plan, and learn to see life through the manifestations of Esma-i Husna, we gradually feel this truth within us:

“Good comes from Absolute Good. Beauty comes from the Absolute Beautiful. Nothing absurd comes from the Absolute Wise.” Master Nursi

This perspective allows us to both feel and recognize that even in difficulties, blessings, beauty, and abundance can exist. A believer is someone who seeks their Lord in everything that happens and follows the trace of His mercy.

Panic Prevents the Heart from Seeing Truth

You are right; when panic, fear, worry, and stress rise, the heart and mind cannot easily comprehend the magnificent system operating in the universe. It becomes difficult to recognize that this grand, mercy-filled system is designed to protect us through the manifestation of Al-Hakim, guiding us toward goodness, virtue, and maturity. Fear clouds the heart, with the thought, “Something will happen!”

However, Risale-i Nur, as a true exegesis of the Quran, repeatedly reminds us in every line:

“Good comes from Absolute Good. Beauty comes from the Absolute Beautiful. Nothing absurd comes from the Absolute Wise.” Master Nursi

As this truth settles in our hearts, we feel more deeply that a Merciful plan operates behind the events we experience. Gradually, the language of complaint fades, replaced by gratitude and surrender.

A Heart Trained in Gratitude Invites Goodness and Beauty

Let me remind myself and you of this observation: Life is beautiful despite everything; it is worth living, smiling, and being content. If we can lift our hearts, eyes, minds, and speech from the darkness of complaint to see the universe’s beauty, and train our words and deep feelings in gratitude, everything changes.

“Thanking Him happens by recognizing those blessings directly from Him, appreciating their value, and feeling your own need for them.” Master Nursi

Being calm and spending time alone is therefore necessary. It is not only about staying calm but also engaging in dhikr that helps return to your heart and essence—whether at a prayer mat or walking in the rain—remembering your Lord. Master Nursi’s saying, “Gratitude increases blessings, heedlessness loses them,” can serve as a guiding principle in everyday life.

This state of gratitude and contentment is not only important and healthy but also wise. It heals the soul, mind, and heart, mitigating the destructive effects of calamities. Thus, a person transitions from being complaining and pessimistic to cheerful, content, spiritually healthy, and beloved. After all, who loves someone who constantly complains?

Gratitude as a Gateway to Healing

Now, let us find a quiet place and start recalling: What has been given to us? What has been granted? In fact, saying “Alhamdulillah” illuminates the heart. Even in the darkest moments, when feeling broken, saying “Alhamdulillah” opens a small window in the heart. In contrast, failing to be grateful can lead to a more destructive collapse.

Contentment should become a habit. Let us not remain like frowning, discontented elders. Speak to the One closer than the jugular vein:

“For His Majesty, We created man and We know what his soul suggests to him! For We are closer to him than his jugular vein!” (Surah Qaf 50)

Do not be ashamed to say, “I love You” to Him; He never leaves this unacknowledged. Sincerely, from the heart, even if there seems nothing to be grateful for, continue saying “thanks, Alhamdulillah.” Repeat it, smile, do it in solitude. Observe how your troubles lighten and find healing.

Do not fear; cry. Share your helplessness, weakness, and poverty with Him. Believe, have faith, give thanks, and be healed.

“When I am ill, it is He who cures me.” (Surah Shu’ara 80)

“Gratitude is to recognize the bounty in the blessing. Recognizing it removes the sorrow resulting from its disappearance. Since blessings vanish, the True Bestower does not leave its place empty; He fills it abundantly, and you delight in its renewal.” Master Nursi

O Lord! For every breath I take as a servant who can give thanks to You, who leaves complaints behind and is content with You, I offer countless thanks.

Conclusion

Practicing gratitude is more than a spiritual act—it is a lifestyle that nurtures contentment, invites divine blessings, and protects from the corrosive effects of worry and despair. By training our hearts and words in thankfulness, we open the door to a life full of mercy, beauty, and spiritual healing.

One Day You Will Understand: Only God Exists

“They will leave this transient world and be honored with the presence of the Sublime Majesty in the eternal abode. They will be freed from the noise of causes and the dark veils of means, and they will reach their Merciful Lord, in the eternal center of sovereignty, without any veil. Everyone will directly know and find who their Creator, their Worshipped, their Lord, their Master, and their Owner is.”
(Mektubat, Twentieth Letter, First Station)

These sentences by Bediüzzaman Said Nursî describe the true and naked reality that a human being will encounter after departing from the worldly life. By leaving the realm of transience, the human enters an eternal realm where veils are lifted, causes lose their significance, and only the existence of God shines. This transition is, in essence, the greatest meeting where the highest degree of Tawhid (Divine Oneness) is manifested.

The True Direction of the Human Journey

“Dâr-ı fânî” refers to the temporary world in which humans currently live. This place is a realm of intense tests, surrounded by causes. In contrast, “dâr-ı bâkî” is the eternal life; it is entered through a door opened by death, stepping from transience into eternity.

In this world, humans are constantly engaged with causes: they work for sustenance, visit doctors for healing, and seek solutions for difficulties. However, all these cause-and-effect relationships are veils, by the wisdom of the test. The true agent, the one who creates and governs everything, is only God. In the Hereafter, these veils will be lifted, and causes will vanish. There, there is no test; only truth exists.

This truth is described by Nursî as “being freed from the noise of causes.” In other words, humans completely detach from the complex images of the world and the shadows of causes. They will then know that:

There is only one true Doer: God.

The Sublime Presence: A Union Without Means and Veils

“The Sublime Presence” is the manifestation of God’s grandeur, majesty, and eternal sovereignty. In the Hereafter, the servant will be accepted into this presence without any veil or intermediary. This is the greatest union that the human soul longs for.

In the world, humans reach God through:

His works,

Evidences,

Manifestations of His Beautiful Names (Esma-i Hüsna),

The words of the prophets,

The teachings of revealed books.

In the Hereafter, however, there are no means, no causes, no veils. Humans will encounter their Lord directly. In this encounter, the servant will:

Recognize their Creator,

Recognize their Worshipped,

Recognize their Lord,

Recognize their Master,

Recognize their Owner.

This recognition is not merely intellectual. It becomes a witnessing (shuhudi) knowledge, perceptible to conscience, soul, and feeling, as clear as sight. The unseen dimension (ghayb) of faith in this world transforms into a direct vision (mushahada) in the Hereafter.

Only God Exists

The phrase “Only God exists” is a truth often accepted in worldly life as a requirement of faith. In this life, humans say it by believing, not by seeing. In the Hereafter, however, this truth will be seen, felt, and lived.

In this world, Divine Power hides behind causes. This concealment is part of the wisdom of testing. As Nursî explains:

“Honor and majesty demand that causes appear as veiled in the eyes of reason; Oneness and majesty demand that causes withdraw from the effect of truth.”
(Mesnevi-i Nuriye)

In the Hereafter, this veil is completely lifted. Everyone will see the one true reality behind all:

The doctor is not the Healer; God, the Shafi, is.

The job does not provide sustenance; God, the Razzak, does.

No one protects; God, the Hafiz, protects.

This understanding is what Nursî conveys with: “Everyone will directly know their Creator.” The Hereafter is where Tawhid shines in a pure, unshadowed, veil-free manner.

The Center of Eternal Sovereignty

In the Hereafter, the servant is admitted to the center of God’s eternal sovereignty. This “makarr-ı saltanat-ı ebedî”—the center of Divine rule—is the realm of Paradise and Divine presence.

This rank fulfills the human soul’s innate desires for permanence (beka) and beauty (cemal). The servant no longer engages with the perishable but with the Everlasting Essence.

The Qur’an expresses this truth:

“Everything besides Him will perish. Judgment belongs to Him alone, and to Him you will be returned.” (Qasas 28:88)

This verse summarizes the reality that emerges in the Hereafter: Only God exists.

The Meaning of the Ultimate Journey

Death is not annihilation; it is the gateway to truth. Even though the world is a realm of shadows and veils, the Hereafter is:

Where truth is unveiled,

Where Tawhid is fully realized,

Where the servant meets the Lord directly,

Where causes no longer exist,

Where reward and peace begin.

Nursî’s expression “reaching the Sublime Presence without veils” captures the essence of this ultimate meeting. The human will experience direct union with the Lord who created them from nothing, nurtures and disciplines them, and fulfills every need.

And in that moment…
The human will comprehend the entire truth by living it

In today’s fast-paced world, most of us are buried under clutter. Clothes unworn for years in the wardrobe, unread books on shelves, drawers filled with items we no longer use… These lingering extras don’t just take up space in our homes—they occupy space in our minds as well. Like programs running in the background on a computer, clutter keeps us distracted, drains our energy and adds to our mental load.

Organization isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a key to mental well-being, peace, and productivity. A tidy home leads to clearer thinking, calmer emotions, and healthier relationships. By removing unnecessary items, you make room for new opportunities, because emptiness naturally allows for growth.

The Spiritual and Economic Benefits of Letting Go

Every item in our home, whether we realize it or not, carries a weight in our minds. Holding onto things we don’t use or that no longer bring joy is like carrying an invisible burden. Letting go lightens both the soul and the body. People who declutter their homes often feel clearer in decision-making, freer in relationships, and more at peace in life.

Minimalism discourages unnecessary accumulation and seeking happiness through material consumption. It encourages simplicity in everyday life and helps reduce stress. Research shows that a minimalist lifestyle can lower levels of anxiety and depression, allowing individuals to feel lighter and more productive.

Indeed, even Satan displayed great ingratitude toward his Lord:
“Do not bind your hands completely to your neck, nor open them entirely. If you do, you will end up blamed and empty-handed, exposed.” (Quran 17:26–27, 29)

“Eat, drink, give charity, and dress, but do not be arrogant or wasteful. Indeed, Allah wishes to see the effect of His blessings manifest in His servant.” (Bukhari, Libas 1; Ibn Majah, Libas 23)

As stated in Tarihçe-i Hayat:
“The Master was a genius whose prudence was measured not by simple things like eating, drinking, or clothing, but by avoiding waste of spiritual and intangible values—like thought, intellect, talent, ability, time, life, self, and breath.”

How I Organized My Home

Creating lasting order requires a few key principles.

First, organize by category rather than by room. I started with my clothes, donating anything I didn’t wear or need.

Then I went through my books, giving away anything that wasn’t essential.

Documents that were no longer useful were also reviewed and removed.

Small, unnecessary items were collected and sent away,

and finally, I let go of sentimental objects that weighed me down.

I applied a simple item test for each object:
“Do I really need this? When was the last time I used it?”

This method didn’t just help organize my home—it changed my perspective on life. Who is the boss—me or my possessions? I discovered that simplicity and minimalism are truly beneficial for the human spirit.

Willpower and Habit for Lasting Order

Tidying up isn’t a one-time task—it’s a lifestyle. Regularly asking yourself whether new items are truly necessary helps create sustainable habits. Periodically reviewing unused items saves money and supports a minimalist, sustainable lifestyle.

Freedom Through Order

Letting go of excess opens the door to freedom. A well-ordered home reflects inner peace. By releasing unnecessary burdens, both happiness and clarity increase. Organizing is not just about arranging items; it’s about reshaping your entire life.

“O Allah! Put into practice what You have taught me for my benefit, teach me what will benefit me, and grant me knowledge that will bring me benefit.”

I don’t see it anywhere, yet my pains are here, burning and consuming me. What will become of me?

The elderly woman, her head crowned with a silver flame, lifted her gaze. Her emerald-green eyes were so beautiful… With a voice as soft as herself, she said:

“The cure for your trouble is not with me, my dear. You should go to this Risale-i Nur study house and ask them.”

This heroic woman, whose heart and gaze were filled with compassion, would always pour handfuls of luminous prayers over me whenever I was troubled, helpless, or overwhelmed, and then send me to the Nur study house. There, my face would brighten, my heart would open, and the heavy weight on my shoulders would lift. O my Merciful Lord, have mercy on our mothers. Amin.

A Door That Opens to Relief

As usual, while climbing the stairs of that apartment, I was thinking about how I should ask my question. The door opened to a pair of smiling eyes and a warm embrace that seemed to hand my troubles over to the water and carry them away.

When I began to speak of life’s burdens, those eyes narrowed slightly, and—what a coincidence—they resumed reading the book on the table from where it had been left:

“Man is weak; his afflictions are many. He is poor; his needs are endless. He is powerless; the load of life is very heavy. If he does not rely on the All-Powerful, the Glorious, and does not trust and submit to Him, his conscience will always remain in torment. Fruitless hardships, pains, and regrets will drown him. They will make him either drunk or a beast.” (The Words)

Knowing Allah: The Key to True Help

“I already know all this,” I interrupted. “I just don’t know how it’s going to heal me.”

“No,” she replied, “that’s not the real problem. The real priority is knowing Allah.”

“I know that too,” I said, somewhat arrogantly.

“Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him.” (Surah Al-Ikhlas)

It was as if I had come not to learn, but to teach.

She smiled gently. “Oh, is that so? Then who is Allah? What is He like? I’m asking you about the Allah in your mind.”

“What do you mean by that?” I objected.

“No, the Allah in your mind—and in everyone’s mind—is different. Because look at what Allah says: ‘I am as My servant thinks of Me. As he knows Me, so will I deal with him.’ [Bukhari, Tawhid 15; 35; Muslim, Dhikr 2 (2675), Tawbah 1 (2675).] That is, however you know the Allah in your mind, that is how your life will be.”

She continued with an example: “You know Ismail and Nazlı, right? Others know them too, but with different traits. One knows their compassionate—Jamal—side; another has seen them when angry, knowing their Jalal side.

“So then, you have to know Him—truly know Him—so you can trust Him, rely on Him, be happy, and be freed from troubles and worries.”

Marifatullah: The Path to Lasting Healing

Let’s hear it from Ustad:

“He who knows Him and obeys Him is happy, even in prison. He who forgets Him is in prison, even if he is in palaces, and is miserable.” (The Rays)

“In all the ranks of sainthood, the love that comes from marifatullah—knowing Allah—is the most important essence and elixir.” (The Letters)

Maratib al-Wilayah: that is, on the road to Allah’s friendship. The first thing we need is marifatullah, knowing Him. Then there will be no trouble, no pain.

“For the one who does not know Allah, a world full of calamities weighs upon him. For the one who knows Allah, his world is filled with light and spiritual joy, felt according to the degree of his faith’s strength.” (The Flashes)

That means you must do marifatullah readings—learning to know Allah—if you are serious and truly seeking a sincere solution to your troubles. Otherwise, whatever you do here, going home and scrolling on your phone, watching a movie, or eating a delicious meal will not give lasting solutions. “If you want,” she said, “I can recommend readings to you—if you wish, of course.”

I seemed willing. When I got home, I had only one recommendation on my phone:

“My sister, read the 23rd Word with your heart, soul, and mind. Let’s meet next week. I kiss your mother’s hands.”

A Prayer for Mothers

May Allah grant our mothers health, wellness, and a blessed life.

For those who have departed to the Hereafter, our prayer—quoting from Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)—is:

“May Allah forgive you and reward you with goodness! May Allah have mercy on you, my dear mother! You would go hungry yourself, but feed me! You would go unclothed yourself, but clothe me! You would let me taste the most delicious blessings, depriving your own soul! And you would do all this only seeking Allah’s pleasure and the Hereafter’s abode!

Allah, who gives life and causes death, never dies. He is Ever-Living, continuously alive.

O Allah! Forgive my mother. Expand her grave. For the sake of Your Messenger and the previous prophets, accept my prayer, O my exalted Lord, the Most Merciful of the merciful!”

Suddenly, it felt like everything went dark. As if someone could hear me, I loudly said, “How quickly it got dark!” Then I heard that voice again which shivered me inside. On these journeys, it would often speak to me.

“You haven’t taken off your sunglasses, darling. You know:

‘The one who closes his eyes only turns the day into night for himself.’ (Master Nursi)”

“You scared me. You again? Who are you?”

“Don’t be afraid, I am your friend and inner voice. And I am on duty,” it laughed joyfully.

“What will you tell me today?” I asked, with deep curiosity. Just between us—if someone saw me, they’d think I was crazy. A biker, talking to himself in the middle of a forest road!

“Everywhere went dark because your sunglasses were still on, right? And you know that wasn’t real. Only you saw it that way. At that moment, Allah, Al-Musawwir, was painting the sky in a magnificent way, in colors you would never see again. But you saw it all black. Today, let’s talk about this—shall we?”

“As if you’d stop talking if I said ‘Be quiet.’”

“No, but if you mute me and expose yourself to other things, you won’t hear me. And that exposure is your choice. You know, life is made up of choices.”

“Anyway, let me get to the point.”

“I am as My servant thinks of Me.”
(Hadith Qudsi – Bukhari 8/171, Muslim 4/2061)

You know this Hadith Qudsi, right? Everyone knows it, but one must look into its depth.

The Way You See God Shapes Your World

To say it in today’s terms: Everything depends on our perspective and takes shape accordingly. If we wear the transparent glasses that show the universe under the control of a Merciful, Compassionate, Generous, and Loving Lord—yes, a Lord who loves us deeply—and we recognize Allah correctly, then He treats us that way. It’s your choice now.

What kind of a Lord is your God in your mind?

A scary question, isn’t it? But look what Said Nursî says:

“Whoever doesn’t truly know or love Him becomes afflicted—both spiritually and physically—with endless pain, misery, and delusions.”
(20th Letter)

The key words: “Doesn’t truly know or love.”

I’ve asked the question. Now go consult the 20th Letter, will you?

Everyone’s understanding is shaped by how they perceive their Lord in their mind and heart.

Do You Believe in Ease, or Just Know It?

Allah creates everything with ease. There’s ease, abundance, and blessing everywhere. Do you think this is true? Do you believe it—or merely know it? Can you see it?

Take another look at your life. If not, perhaps read more about the Names of Allah.

What is our general perspective—hardship or ease?

Does a blessing come easily or through hardship? Again, this depends on how you assume Allah to be. What is your answer?

What does “Be, and it is” mean to you?

The more you say “Life is hard,” the harder it gets. Try this instead:

“My Lord loves me, because when I was nothing worth mentioning, He created me and chose me. So, He must love me and is showing it through all this beauty. He is making things easier for me.”

Do You Truly Pray?

Wait a minute—we have a problem.

Do you ask something from Him? For example, do you ever go into prostration in the middle of the night and say, “Please help me, I have no one else but You”?

Do you pray like that?

I don’t mean those memorized words after prayer. I mean words spoken with love. Try it—and see.

Clean your mirror with repentance. Purify your soul. Because…

Everyone sees the universe through their own mirror.

Each person is given a unique world—one that reflects the color of their innermost beliefs.
(Master Nursi)

(Recall the sunglasses metaphor.)

Whatever color you paint your inner world, your reflection on the mirror will be painted in the same tone.

Final Words: Take Off Your Glasses

Come on, my friend. Take off the sunglasses. Smile.

Look what the Merciful One who loves you says—yes, He says it to you, He speaks to you:

“We send down from the Qur’an what is healing and mercy for the believers…”
(Al-Isra, 82)

O You who possess infinite treasures of mercy! Grant me the grace to trust in You wholeheartedly and think well of You. Ameen.

Whenever I tried to talk to someone about it, they would recite the same memorized clichés. But I already knew those things. If you’re only going to tell me what I already know, what’s the point in asking?

Then I remembered him—a dear friend I hadn’t spoken to in a long time. I found his number and called. He answered warmly, as if no time had passed. We met in Copenhagen the following week, and walked to Tivoli Gardens. Our tea was ready. “Let’s begin. May what we speak be healing. Ameen,” he said.

“Why, are we sick?”

“Sins are eternal diseases in the life to come; and even in this worldly life, they are spiritual illnesses for the heart, conscience, and soul.” —Master Nursi

That’s why healing is needed—for our faces to smile again. Let’s begin with an intention, because you know how important that is.

I intend, for the sake of Allah, to find healing from the illness of sin. Ameen.

Let me tell you, and you take notes, alright? We’ll tackle healing step by step:

Start your day with intention: Each morning, either silently or aloud, say: “O Lord! Today I want to live in accordance with Your will, avoid sins, and be a beneficial servant. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my ego and Satan.”

Our daily invocation: Lā ilāha illā anta, subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.

Say “Astaghfirullah” throughout the day, seeking protection.

Give secret charity.

Be friends with righteous people.

Do a daily self-check before bed: “Where did I go wrong, and where did I grow today?”

Know your weaknesses: Honestly identify which sins you are inclined toward.

Reflect on death and the afterlife—reminding yourself this world is temporary.

“Faith makes a man truly human—perhaps even a sultan.” — Master Nursi.

Think on this a few minutes: Who am I? Why was I created? What path does faith call me to?

Speak to your ego: “O ego! There is death, the grave, the gathering, and judgment… Even if sin seems sweet, it is poisoned. It brings torment in both this world and the next. Salvation lies in realizing this truth.”

Before bed, ask: “What did I do today for the sake of Allah? And what did I neglect?”

What you see, hear, or the music you listen to affects you deeply. Be selective. You are precious—only let the precious into your heart.

“I know all this, but sin is very tempting, especially when it’s become a habit.”

You’re absolutely right.

Even saying this is valuable—recognizing sin’s allure is the first step in truly fighting it.

If sins weren’t attractive, the test of life wouldn’t hold meaning. Satan exploits that allure; the ego seizes the opportunity. But when you resist—that struggle becomes your most precious worship.

Said Nursi says: “In times like these, abstaining from even one sin amid the onslaught of thousands becomes equivalent to fulfilling hundreds of obligations.” —Kastamonu Addendum (Kastamonu Lahikası)

A habit means the sin has embedded itself in your heart. But the key is to tear through heedlessness and always keep the door of repentance open.

What can you do?

Stop fighting the habit—start managing it. Everyone makes mistakes. But every moment you can say, “I can skip it today,” brings you closer to freedom.

You may not sin every day, but your ego whispers daily. Just once, say “No.” That “No” is the first link in breaking the chain. Say it: NO. NO. NO.

A sin might bring five minutes of relief, but leaves you with five hours, five days—or a lifetime—of regret.

Your soul is pure, your heart sensitive. Your conscience does not accept it.

If a sinner repents afterward, the sin turns into reward—not punishment.

No matter how far you fall, every time you turn to Allah, you win.

Allah opens His door the thousand-and-first time—even after a thousand falls. He loves those who repent and purify themselves.

Many walk this same path. You are not alone. Millions share this struggle.

“You are still Allah’s servant. He still loves you. Just begin again.”

Ask yourself: “Who am I? What is my true worth? Do I want to be a sultan—noble, respected, loved?”

Say to your ego: “O my ego, that sin you crave is like poisoned honey—it harms you even if it tastes sweet.”

Even once, postpone that habitual sin. Say: “Not now.” Just say it—and move on. Even one moment gained is a huge win.

“I may be at fault, but I have a Lord who wants me to return to Him.”

Astaghfirullah al-‘Azim. Even if I fall a thousand times, Allah is merciful enough to lift me up the thousand-and-first.

Write in your journal or heart today: “I want to give up this sin because…” Finding your reason makes you stronger.

Look at your friends: “Who I spend time with becomes reflected in my heart—I absorb their color, their energy.”

That’s okay. Even letting go of part of it is valuable. “Today’s small progress is tomorrow’s victory.”

The fleeting pleasure of sin—or eternal peace? Isn’t it time to choose?

“Ya Wadud.” Allah loves you. Remember that you love Him too. “I love Allah. And because I love Him, I want to reduce this sin.”

Night is often when sin is most tempting… But it’s also the perfect time to turn to Allah.

Nighttime prayer: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my ego and the evil of my Satan.”

Before bed, recite silently for 3 minutes: “Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.” This helps guard your spirit during moments of solitude and vulnerability.

Feeling tempted at night? What to do?

Immediately get up and make ablution (wudu). That one move is a powerful strike against sin. Then pray a simple two-unit repentance prayer:

“O Allah, help me tonight. I complain of my ego to You. Draw me near to You in this night’s darkness—not to sin.”

“Tonight, I want to please You, not myself.”

Put this on your pillow, desk, or phone screen. Let it whisper to your heart when you forget.

While you struggle, Allah sees you and loves you. The angels applaud you. You’ve taken the step—now trust in your Lord’s mercy.

“Committing a sin doesn’t make you completely bad. Giving it up is what makes you beautiful.”

God willing, we’ll meet again someday in Tivoli Gardens. If you ever want to share or talk, I’m here. Tonight, I’ll include you in my prayers.

And if only once tonight, just say:

“O Lord, I’m resisting tonight for Your sake. Please protect my heart.”

May Allah grant you strength, peace, and steadfastness. Good night, my brother… May Allah grant peace to your heart.

He stepped into the little shop with these words. The man inside—who seemed as though he had arrived from another century—lifted his head from the book before him. He received the greeting, motioned with his hand for the guest to sit, then continued reading for a while. At last, he spoke: “Welcome, my dear child. Today we were going to talk about blessing (barakah) , weren’t we?”

All at once, this man appeared to him not poor or modest, but as someone immensely wealthy. When they began to speak, even time itself became blessed. Their voices carried a kind of grace, and words flowed as though they were taking flight into eternity.

“When you greeted me at the door with salām, you made such a prayer that its value cannot be measured. No scale can weigh it, no intellect can grasp it. Do you realize what you asked from Allah for me when you used the word barakah?”

“I just said barakah… I’d learned that from you. But honestly, I haven’t fully understood what blessing really means.”

“You said: ‘O Lord, bestow upon this strange servant of Yours boundless generosity, blessings, spiritual abundance, prosperity, happiness, plenty of sustenance, safety, and beauty.’ What a beautiful prayer—did you even notice?”

“Is that what I said? I’ve grown so unfamiliar with these Islamic concepts, and the secrets they carry…”

“Then let’s begin. May our conversation be blessed, insha’Allah. Barakah means that what one possesses—whether it be wealth, property, food, drink, time, or life itself—becomes sufficient for Allah’s servants and pleases them. And this happens when the person receiving it becomes aware of what they’ve been given, and shows gratitude with words, with conduct, and with acts of worship.”

“When we give thanks, we witness that the things we’re grateful for are blessed—that they suffice, that they bring us joy. And that witnessing is the very heart of barakah: to realize from Whom it came.”

“I’d like to ask something.”

“Of course, go ahead, my dear child.”

How Is Blessing (Barakah) Increased?

By being mindful, at every moment, of what has been granted
By ceasing to complain, learning contentment, and giving thanks
By avoiding all forms of waste—whether of money, time, food, or drink
By keeping both oneself and one’s home clean
By rising early

O Allah! Bless my nation in their early mornings (in the works they begin in those hours).
(Abū Dāwūd, Jihād, 78; Tirmidhī, Buyū‘, 6)

By increasing prayers, remembrance, and acts of worship
By reading the Qur’an and its commentary regularly
By spreading salām and greeting one’s household consistently
By giving regular charity and zakāt
By practicing patience and trust in God
By treating others—especially one’s family—with kindness, a warm smile, compassion, mercy, and respect

“And do you know what happens when you do all this? Your day is blessed, your time expands. You’ll find yourself saying, ‘So much fit into this day!’ Your sustenance is blessed. Your meals are blessed. Your life becomes blessed. Even your writing is blessed—six hundred thousand handwritten copies are produced, millions read them, and the more they’re read, the more blessing they carry.”

“Whatever you once thought insufficient becomes more than enough with Allah’s blessing. The mystery of barakah cannot be reasoned out; those who rely on calculation alone cannot understand it. Two people may earn the same income, live under the same conditions—yet one is never satisfied, always struggling, always complaining. The other lives with ease, in abundance and serenity, always thanking his Creator.”

“Barakah is a gift, a divine favor bestowed upon Allah’s servants. I’ve always been struck with awe whenever I’ve witnessed it. May my Lord grant me barakah, and the awareness to see it when it comes.”

“And as you know, what we speak of is affirmed in the Book of Allah:”

If you are grateful, I will surely increase My favor upon you
(Surat Ibrahim, 14:7)

“You also know, don’t you, that the life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was full of miraculous examples of barakah?”

“This barakah… it is a miraculous thing. As I said before, it cannot be fully explained by reason.”

“And as you know, the Risale-i Nur is overflowing with examples of barakah. Since these things cannot always be explained by logic, they must be regarded as a divine favor—a gift, wouldn’t you say?”

“So then, let me offer you a few examples teberrüken—for blessing, if you will:”

According to the degree of service, there is a development, expansion, relief, and blessing in my heart, body, mind, and livelihood.

I live with frugality and blessing. I do not take favors from anyone other than my Provider.

Indeed, the light, heat, blessing, and others that come to the earth come from the heavens.

Bismillah—what a great, inexhaustible power; what a vast, unending blessing.

By Master Said Nursi

“I know. This thing called barakah is not something that can be easily explained. That’s why I say—just live it, and see for yourself.”

“Come now. Let us make a prayer and head to the mosque. Listen—the adhan is being called. We are being invited to blessing…”

O God! For the sake of the blessing of the Noble Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, grant blessing to the physical and spiritual sustenance You have bestowed upon us! Amin.

It was one of those luminous nights again. He glanced through the messages on his phone. One caught his eye more than the rest:

“I’m terribly afraid of death. I’ve recently lost the one I loved most. My days are filled with anxiety and unease. I read prayers, but it doesn’t help. What am I to do now?”

Without delay, he replied:

“Inshallah, I’ll send you something I wrote about the fear of death.”

The next day, one question lingered in his mind:

Why do people fear death?

Later, he turned to a friend—a confidant he always sought counsel from, who never failed to offer an answer. When he arrived, his friend was immersed in silent remembrance. Two books lay open on the table: The Words by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, and a work by Gaws al-Azam Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani.

He asked again:

Why do people fear death?

The answer came in one simple sentence:

Because they do not know the Creator.

He frowned slightly.

But that doesn’t make sense. People who ask these questions—who feel this fear—they don’t have a problem believing in God.

His friend smiled, and deep dimples formed on his face.

I’m not talking about belief. I’m talking about knowing. The two are entirely different.

Look how Bediuzzaman explains this:

“We must work, we must come to know Him. Because, it is understood that He is the one who brought us here. If we do not know Him, who will help us?” (The Words)

See that? It doesn’t talk about believing in what is unseen—it talks about knowing, about becoming familiar, gaining understanding.

He opened the book and continued:

“The highest rank of humanity and the greatest station of mankind is the knowledge of Allah within belief in Allah. The brightest happiness and the sweetest bounty of jinn and mankind is the love of Allah within that knowledge. And the purest joy for the human soul and the most sincere delight for the human heart is the spiritual pleasure within that love. Yes, all true happiness, pure joy, sweet bounty, and sincere pleasure are certainly in the knowledge and love of Allah.” Master Nursi

Is the tea ready? Let’s have some walnuts and raisins too, shall we?

Bismillah. Let the ship set sail into the ocean of divine knowledge.

Yes, belief in God is the foundation. But the question is deeper: Who is your Lord? And do you know how to reach that knowledge?

You might say, “Read the Risale-i Nur.”

But I’d say, don’t just read—step into it. Because those books are lessons in the Names of Allah, page after page. They reveal Him name by name. They tell me who the One I bow to in prayer truly is.

And how do these Divine Names do this?

“It treats man’s weakness and helplessness and poverty and need with reliance upon a Compassionate and Powerful One.” Master Nursi

Two Names appear here:

Qadir — The One whose power suffices for all things. Rahim — The Merciful, who forgives, protects, nourishes, and pities His beloved and believing servants.

Have you noticed? So far, we haven’t even spoken of death or fear. We’ve spoken of knowing and trusting—of who Allah is.

Now we begin to understand:

Man is a being full of weakness, helplessness, poverty, and infinite need. And death—death touches all of these.

The solution lies in remembering: Allah is Rahim.

If a mother loves and protects her child so tenderly, would the One who created all mercy in all mothers cause harm through death?

Death is merely a change of place. A passage from one room to another, from one city to the next.

But how can that be? The one I love is now beneath the earth.

A gentle smile returned.

“Just as a seed that has entered underground will, of course, become a tree in the realm of the air, so too will a person who has entered the earth certainly yield a sprout of everlasting life in the realm of barzakh.” Master Nursi

Isn’t that clear? Smile. Just a little.

There’s only one real cause of human suffering.

Is it really that simple?

Yes. Let’s read it together:

“While in this condition, since he is connected with mankind and the world due to his humanity, but he does not imagine the world and mankind to be under the control of a Wise, All-Knowing, All-Powerful, Merciful, and Generous Being, and instead attributes them to chance and nature, the states of the world and the conditions of people constantly torment him. Along with his own pain, he also suffers from the pain of others.” Master Nursi

Let’s open this up. Everything—life, death, the world, its events—if we see them as random, chaotic, or without purpose, then of course we are tormented.

But if we remember who controls all this:

Hakim — The One who does all things with wisdom and for our benefit. Alim — The One who knows all things, even what your heart will feel tomorrow. Qadir — The One who created you from a single drop. Rahim — More merciful than all mothers. Karim — The One who gives generously and continues His giving eternally in Paradise.

Forget Him—and fear will bite from every direction. You won’t just carry your own pain. You’ll carry everyone’s.

And again, the solution is in Risale-i Nur, The 32nd Word:

It treats man’s weakness and helplessness and poverty and need with reliance upon a Compassionate and Powerful One. (We are helpless and needy—so leave the burden to the One who can carry it.)

It offers relief by surrendering the burden of life and existence to His mercy and power, instead of trying to carry it alone. (Leave the weight on the ship—ride it. He knows the way.)

It teaches that man is not a “talking animal” but a true human being and a noble guest of the All-Merciful. (You are honored. You were chosen. You are His guest.)

It shows that death is a prelude to reunion with beloved ones who’ve already crossed into the next world. (Death is meeting again. Rejoice.)

It proves that the grave is not a terror, but a gate opening into gardens of joy, mercy, and Paradise. (The grave is not the end. It is the beginning of the promise.)

It closes the mouth of the dragon, and opens a door to a beautiful garden. (The grave is not a monster. It is a gate to mercy.)

No comment needed. Just alhamdulillah.

They stood up together. As they stepped into the garden, ships in the bay appeared behind veils of mist. The scent of orange blossoms whispered of resurrection.

Without thinking, a phrase rose to his lips:

You will meet again.

His heart twisted with pain, twisting again. His mind was ablaze, jumping from one thought to another, tormenting him terribly.

He had read numerous philosophy books, many religious books as well, yet none of them had eased the pain of the person within him. A close friend he had just spoken to on the phone had recommended a therapist to him. It had become a necessity. The thoughts running through his mind were unbearable.

Who Is Thinking These?

He was very helpless and exhausted. He was not at all satisfied with his life. The religious talks and sermons he had listened to only frightened him more. His heart darkened, his hope shattered. His silent cries had turned into sobs under the blanket late at night.

He felt very impure and sinful. “You are very sinful,” he told himself. “And on top of that, you are sick, you are sick.”

With resentment, he deleted the phone number his friend had sent. Walking and walking, he reached the seaside, sat down, and opened Instagram. He read a few stories, feeling even worse. There, a man was speaking about hell and torment. How dark this world was. “I will never smile,” he said to himself.

The phone rang, ringing painfully, just like in Turkish movies. He did not answer. He had no strength to talk, with a voice that had fallen into this sick and deep swamp.

Two Months Later

As he sat on the wall, a cat approached and touched him as if embracing him. Soon, he was going to his appointment. He decided to go by bicycle; the office was very close anyway.

Forgetting even to lock his bicycle, he rushed inside. A young female assistant greeted him, “Welcome, you arrived right on time,” and led him inside.

The therapist smiled at him and said, “There’s nothing to worry about; we are going to read a book together.”

“Are you going to tell me a story?” he teased slightly.

“We will read a book together, and inshallah, we will both find healing.”

“Why? Are you sick too?”

“Of course. Everyone is a little sick and needs treatment every day.”

“Oh, really? Alright, let’s read. I suddenly got excited.”

He held a thin brochure in his hand.

“You will listen to this part I will read without making any comments, then we will work on it word by word and find healing, okay?”

“Okay,” he said, grinning helplessly. “Since I’m here.”

Reading Therapy: Bibliotherapy

The book, as you know, was The Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (Worry – Anxiety – Compulsion) Treatise written by the End of Times Therapist from the Risale-i Nur Collection.

These reading sessions continued for days. The therapist never even asked about his troubles. He read and explained; he read and explained. There were even moments when they cried together out of joy.

What Did the Therapist Say?

“Oh, you who suffer from the disease of worry! Do you know what your worries resemble? They resemble a calamity. The more importance you give them, the more they swell. If you ignore them, they wither away. If you look at them as something big, they grow; if you see them as small, they shrink. If you fear them, they become heavier and make you ill. If you don’t fear them, they become light and hidden. If you don’t understand their nature, they persist and settle in. If you recognize their nature, if you know them, they vanish. So, I will explain only the ‘Five Aspects’ of this troublesome worry, which occurs frequently. Perhaps it will be a cure for you and me. For this worry is such a thing that ignorance invites it, while knowledge repels it. If you do not recognize it, it comes; if you do, it goes.” (21st Word, Second Station)

“But if it is an imaginary illness, the most effective cure is to not give it importance. The more importance you give it, the more it grows and swells. If you don’t give it importance, it shrinks and disperses. Just as if you provoke bees, they swarm around your head; if you ignore them, they disperse. And just as in darkness, an illusion of a snake from a swinging rope grows the more importance you give it. Sometimes it even drives one to madness; but if you don’t give it importance, you see that it’s just an ordinary rope, and you laugh at your earlier panic.” (20th Remedy, Treatise for the Sick)

Ways to Overcome Worries

The therapist leaned back, took a sip of his mint tea, and said:

Whatever bad feelings you have, know that they do not belong to you. They may come from Satan, from a misleading preacher, or from a societal mindset.

Always remember that Satan continuously whispers to you, constantly saying words that will break your morale, and never believe every negative thought that comes to your mind. Because thoughts come from two sources: either Satanic or Divine. Any unpleasant idea or word is from Satan; keep this in mind. Whenever such a thought enters your mind, say, “This thought is not mine,” recite your prayers, and continue on your path. Do not let Satan mock you. Say Euzu-Besmele and move forward.

You must have knowledge about the issue that troubles you, such as the fear of death, illness, or poverty. Knowing and understanding the nature of worry is a method of overcoming it.

Do not dwell too much on your worries. The more importance you give, the more they grow; if ignored, they wither.

Do not exaggerate in your mind; immediately engage in another activity. The bigger you see it, the bigger it becomes; the smaller you see it, the smaller it gets.

Do not fear. Fear makes it heavier and causes illness. Psychological distress can turn into physical illness. If you do not fear, it lightens and stays hidden.

Reading: Bibliotherapy Recommendations

Duha, Inshirah, Falaq, Nas Surahs

Every day, we are exposed to various stimuli—through television, social media, conversations, or billboards on the streets. These images or sounds can be either beneficial or harmful. The key issue here is whether this exposure is consciously chosen.

Most of the time, exposure occurs subconsciously, embedding itself into our minds and shaping our future behaviors. Just as someone who watches football every day naturally talks about football, someone frequently exposed to the Quran begins to adopt its language.

POSITIVE EXPOSURE

Now, let’s listen to Master Nursî on this topic:

“Whoever immerses themselves deeply in something will generally become estranged from everything else.” (Risale-i Nur Collection)

In other words, if a person constantly engages with something and exposes themselves to it, they become fully connected to it with all their faculties. Consequently, their interest and connection to other things gradually fade and diminish over time. This attachment and engagement can happen either consciously or unconsciously.

Examples of Positive Exposure:

The repetition of verses in the Qur’an allows our Merciful Lord to regularly expose us to beneficial and constructive messages.

The repetition in prayers: “Guide us to the straight path.” (Al-Fatiha/6)

Daily supplications from Hadiths: “O Allah, who turns hearts from one state to another, keep my heart steadfast in Your religion!” (Tirmidhi, Qadar 7, Supplications 90, 124)

Regular exposure through Risale-i Nur reminders, such as those regarding prayer: “Every new day is an opening to a new world for you and for everyone. If you do not perform your prayer, your world for that day will fade away in darkness and disorder. It will bear witness against you in the realm of spirits.” (Risale-i Nur Collection)

Regular reading habits

Personal readings

Prayer recitations: Five times a day, we immerse ourselves in supplications and heartfelt prayers.

Regular exposure to such positive, beneficial, and wise repetitions can:

Help us become genuine Quran students throughout our lives,

Lead to a happy life in this world,

Ensure our worldly affairs run smoothly,

Contribute to our spiritual, intellectual, and physical well-being,

And ultimately, by Allah’s will, allow us to enter the grave with faith.

NEGATIVE EXPOSURE

“The capital of life is very limited, yet the necessary tasks are numerous.” (Risale-i Nur Collection)

This section concerns how much time we dedicate to exposure—what we immerse ourselves in. How many minutes of our 24-hour day are spent on positive exposure?

Examples of Negative Exposure:

Watching endless news cycles (See: Risale-i Nur Collection)

Excessive TV series consumption (Even historical and religious series often contain elements of conflict and negativity.)

The subconscious impact of excessive advertising, which encourages overconsumption.

Unnecessary scrolling on smartphones

Gossip

Complaints: Complaining is a learned behavior. If we are frequently exposed to people who complain about everything, we may subconsciously adopt this habit as well.

This list could go on indefinitely. The question is: How much of our 24-hour day is occupied by these?

“The capital of life is very limited, yet the necessary tasks are numerous.” (Risale-i Nur Collection)

WHAT CAN I DO?

I should consciously choose what I am exposed to.

When watching something, I should be selective: Is this beneficial for my worldly and eternal life?

When speaking, I should be selective: Is this beneficial for my worldly and eternal life?

Whether at home, on the subway, on a bus, during a picnic, or while walking, I should expose myself to positive influences:

Listen to online Quran lessons. (Our subtle faculties, such as the mind and imagination, record and utilize this knowledge.)

Read and listen to the Qur’an. (Repeated exposure familiarizes our hearts, souls, and tongues with the divine message.)

Participate in discussions.

Engage in lessons or positive conversations with family members.

Learn something related to my profession.

Listen to, watch, or read something that contributes to my personal and spiritual development or helps solve a worldly problem. (This list can be expanded individually.)

I intend, for the sake of Allah, to expose myself daily to what is beneficial and aligned with my Creator’s pleasure. Bismillah.

Today, let’s take a different perspective on purification, or istighfar. Are you feeling exhausted and stressed? Do you need renewal and a breath of fresh air? No matter how much you rest or how long you sleep, without true purification, positive emotions cannot fully settle within you.

“Whoever makes istighfar (seeking forgiveness) a habit, Allah will grant them relief from every difficulty, a way out of every sorrow, and sustenance from unexpected sources.”Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him ) (Abu Dawood, Witr 26; also see Ibn Majah, Adab 57)

There is a purifying elixir in the remembrance of Astaghfirullah that not only cleanses sins but also purifies our judgments about Allah and the divine order established in the universe. As stated in the Hadith, the rewards of istighfar include:

Relief from hardship

Liberation from sorrow

Unexpected sustenance

What an incredible reward, isn’t it?

How Should One Practice Istighfar?

I won’t repeat the commonly known methods. Instead, here are some personal examples from my own life—you can explore the rest for yourself:

Ya Rab, I seek forgiveness for not fully understanding Your infinite mercy. Astaghfirullah.

Ya Rab, I seek forgiveness for not comprehending how deeply You love Your servants. Astaghfirullah.

Ya Rab, I seek forgiveness for not fully grasping that through Your name Al-Hakim, You have created everything in the universe for my benefit, that You are personally concerned with me, hear me, and value me. Astaghfirullah.

The Endless Benefits of Astaghfirullah

Practicing istighfar brings comfort. Whenever you feel darkness, pain, or sadness within you; whenever you feel restless or overwhelmed; whenever anxiety takes hold, say: Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah.

Repeating Astaghfirullah is an effective way to calm yourself and cleanse your mind and body of worldly burdens. If you are struggling with depression, it soothes and alleviates your distress.

Additionally, istighfar helps distance us from the effects of sin. When practiced regularly, it serves as a reminder of Allah’s omnipresence, significantly reducing the likelihood of engaging in wrongful actions.

Ya Rahman, grant us sincere repentance and allow us to cleanse ourselves in the river of righteous deeds. Ameen.

What Does Master Nursi Say on This Topic?

He who accuses his own soul sees his faults. (Identifying the problem for purification.)

He who admits his faults seeks forgiveness. (Confessing only to Allah.) (O Allah, make me understand better!)

He who seeks forgiveness seeks refuge in Allah. He who seeks refuge is saved from the evil of Satan. (The trap is identified. Satan is rendered ineffective because the servant has recognized both himself and his Creator, InshaAllah.)

Not seeing one’s faults is a greater fault. Not admitting them is a major deficiency. If one acknowledges their faults, the fault ceases to be a fault. If one confesses, they become deserving of forgiveness.
(Risale-i Nur Collection)

And Thus, Purification Takes Place:

“O Creator, forgive our faults. Accept us as Your devoted servants. Keep us trustworthy in the responsibilities You have entrusted us with until the time You call us back. Ameen.”

Two men were engaged in a conversation. While one continued working, he explained the purpose of his efforts to the other:

“I have three main pleasures in this world, my friend. I live and work for them: eating, drinking, and satisfying my desires. That is my life. Besides, life has no other purpose.”

Although many people might not verbally express this belief, their way of living often reflected it. They worked, earned money, sustained their families, had children and grandchildren, and eventually passed away, leaving this world behind.

The Divine Order and Human Responsibility

Nevertheless, our Creator had defined the fundamental needs of human beings in both this world and the hereafter—eating, drinking, sheltering, and procreation—while also providing guidelines for working toward success in both realms. Moreover, He promised even greater rewards in the afterlife.

He designed the world as a magnificent palace, adorned with diverse plants and animals, and filled it with blessings for the eyes to see and the tongue to taste. The sun, the moon, and the stars were assigned roles, and the ever-changing seasons were created with precision.

The Role of Prophets as Guides

People arrived in this world in groups, much like tourist expeditions. Prophets served as guides for these groups, introducing them to the palace and their Creator. They addressed humanity with these words:

“Our Creator wishes to make Himself known to you through the creation of this palace. Recognize Him and strive to know Him well.”

“With these decorations and beauties, He wants to endear Himself to you. Appreciate His artistry and admire His works so that He may love you in return.”

“Through these visible blessings, gifts, and favors, He demonstrates His love for you. Show your love in return by obeying Him.”

“With the abundance of provisions and hospitality you witness, He shows you His compassion and mercy. Express your gratitude and respect toward Him.”

“Through these magnificent creations, He wishes to display His divine beauty. Show your desire to see Him and earn His love.”

“By placing unique seals, distinct imprints, and inimitable marks on each of His creations, He reveals that everything belongs solely to Him, bearing no partners. Acknowledge Him as the One and Only, unparalleled and without equal.” (1)

The Three Dimensions of the World

A tourist is someone who travels for leisure, exploration, and experience without any specific duty or responsibility. However, although human existence in this world resembles that of a tourist, it is far more purposeful and carries a responsibility. This is because both the world and all things within it have three fundamental dimensions:

1. The Spiritual Reflection of the Divine

“The first dimension reflects the Divine Names of God (Asma Ul Husna); they serve as mirrors to His attributes. This aspect is eternal and immune to decay, separation, or annihilation; rather, it is subject to renewal and rejuvenation.” (2)

The world and the universe are schools where one learns about God’s names and attributes. This dimension is beautiful, worthy of admiration and love.

If a person internalizes the lessons of these divine attributes and reflects them in their life, they will attain everlasting generosity and blessings in the infinite realm.

The apparent death and disappearance of the universe are merely a renewal process, like turning a new page. It does not signify permanent loss or destruction.

2. The World as a Preparation for the Hereafter

“The second dimension pertains to the hereafter. It serves as a field for cultivation, a garden of mercy, and the source of paradise. Like the first dimension, it is also beautiful and deserving of love, not contempt.” (3)

In this aspect, the world serves as a preparatory ground for the afterlife. Here, one sows, and there, one reaps. The more one invests in good deeds, the greater the rewards.

If one plants goodness and devotion in this worldly field, they will harvest the eternal paradise in the hereafter. This aspect of the world does not go to waste. As the Qur’an states:

“Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (4)

3. The Illusionary Nature of Worldly Desires

“The third dimension caters to human desires and serves as a veil of heedlessness. It is the playground of worldly pursuits. This aspect is ugly because it is transient, deceptive, and painful. It leads to delusion and disappointment. This is the aspect condemned in hadiths and by the people of truth.” (5)

This dimension is the face of the world that appeals to the self-indulgent nature of humans. It sees the world as a place of amusement and heedlessness. It causes individuals to neglect the purpose of their existence—faith and worship—wasting their lives in frivolities. This transient face offers nothing but torment and punishment in the hereafter.

The dimension of the world that distracts people from God and the afterlife, leading them into a life of sin and heedlessness, is ugly, harmful, and dangerous. It is not worthy of love but rather of disdain.

“The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement. But the home of the Hereafter is far better for those who fear Allah. Will you not then understand?” (6)

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. (Qur’an 39:63)
So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things. (Qur’an 36:83)
And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories. (Qur’an 15:21)
There is no creature but that He holds its forelock. (Qur’an 11:56)

Even though we believe that there is mostly no such thing as coincidence, we unknowingly think that the things that happen to us and the events taking place in the world are random, failing to see the wisdom behind them and the Creator who carries them out. However, there are many wisdoms in this being so. Because this is a world of trial, and for the difference in faith among people to become apparent, for our true selves to be revealed, and for many other wisdoms, all events appear as if they are dependent on certain causes.

In reality, it is God who creates all causes, and the more we can understand this, the more we can progress spiritually and free ourselves from illusions. Now, let’s see what Master Nursi has said about this:

“O heedless, ignorant one who attributes the events and affairs appearing from the domain of causes to the causes themselves!

The causes that you assume to be the owner of things are not the true owners. The real owner is the eternal power that operates behind them. Those causes are merely assigned to announce and spread the true effects that come from that power.

Thus, the domain of causes is like the administrative office of a government, where the orders coming from above are conveyed. Because might and greatness necessitate a veil, and oneness (tawhid) and majesty reject partnership, they do not attribute real effect to causes.”

“Yes, the Eternal Sultan has officials, but they are not executors of actions that would make them partners in His sovereignty and rububiyyah.

Rather, the duty of those officials is to act as heralds, announcing the operations of divine power. Or, they are observers and witnesses who, through their obedience and submission to the divine commands they witness, perform a kind of worship according to their capacities.

“Thus, causes are merely means that have been assigned solely to manifest the dignity of divine power and the grandeur of rububiyyah.

Otherwise, they are not helpers assisting power due to weakness or need. The officials of human kings, however, are appointed out of necessity as helpers and partners to remove the kings’ needs and weaknesses.”

“Therefore, there is no similarity between God’s officials and human officials.

Only those who are heedless and ignorant, unable to see the wisdom and beauty in events and occurrences, begin to complain and protest against the Almighty. Thus, causes have been assigned to redirect the target of these complaints and grievances. Because shortcomings arise from them, stemming from their own incapacity.

A spiritual parable is narrated as a subtle example of this secret:

“Azrael (peace be upon him) said to Almighty God:
‘In the duty of seizing souls, Your servants will complain about me. They will resent me.’

Almighty God, in the language of wisdom, said to him:
‘I will place calamities and illnesses as a veil between you and My servants so that their complaints go to them and they do not resent you.'”

“Yes, just as illnesses are a veil, they serve as a point of attribution for the apparent hardships imagined in death.

And in the act of seizing souls, true wisdom and beauty relate to the duty of Azrael (peace be upon him). Similarly, Azrael (peace be upon him) himself is also a veil. He serves as a point of attribution for certain aspects of soul-taking that outwardly appear merciless and seem inconsistent with the perfection of divine mercy. Thus, he is an overseer of that duty and a veil over divine power.”

“Since we live in a kind of illusionary realm and are subjected to a form of test, our eyes, ears, and senses cannot fully perceive reality.

Our perceptions are completely limited. For this reason, we may not be able to see the rewards behind illnesses, events, and conditions that outwardly seem merciless. Because we cannot understand how the living beings we see aging and dying here are actually being freed from their worn-out and restrictive bodies and reunited with their free and happy souls and their true homeland, we unjustly feel resentment and disappointment toward our Creator.

Or, because we assume that various illnesses and events happen to people by chance, we spend our lives in fear and anxiety, worrying that those bad events or illnesses might happen to us as well. However, everything—including causes—is under the control of the Creator. And when we realize and truly understand this, we can know that taking refuge in our Creator is enough for us, that we do not have to live with fear and anxiety, and thus we can be free. And we can stop unjustly resenting our Creator.”

“As Jesus the Messiah also said, ‘You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ (John 8:32)

Master Nursi also said on this matter:
‘This whispering doubt (waswasa) is such a thing that ignorance invites it, while knowledge repels it. If you do not recognize it, it comes; if you recognize it, it goes.’

Thus, we can say that knowledge and faith are two very important remedies for all our troubles, worries, and fears.

Dear Friend ,

I hope you’re doing well and finding moments of peace in your day. There’s something on my heart that I wanted to share with you, and I thought of writing it down for you to read when you have a quiet moment.

Recently, I came across a quote that made me pause and reflect. It goes, “Ask for the one; others are not worth asking for.” by Master Nursi When I first read it, it struck me deeply, especially because of the way it speaks to the importance of seeking God above all else. It reminded me that, no matter what we may desire or chase after in this life—success, approval, wealth, or even companionship—there is truly only One who can satisfy our hearts and guide us through it all. That One is God.

I know life can sometimes feel overwhelming, like we’re being pulled in many different directions, each one promising fulfillment or answers. But, more and more, I’ve come to realize that nothing and no one can fill the spaces within us quite like God can. He is the One who holds our deepest desires, knows our struggles, and offers us peace that passes understanding.

I wanted to remind you of that today, because sometimes, in the rush of life, we forget to focus on the One who is always there, ready to listen, to comfort, and to lead. I know you’re going through some challenges, and while I’m always here to support you, I also want to encourage you to turn to God in those quiet moments. Ask for the One, because He’s the only One who will never disappoint, the only One whose love is unconditional, the only One who will always be with you no matter what.

If ever you need someone to talk to, to pray with, or just to share in the silence, I’m here for you. But I also know that in seeking God first, you’ll find the strength and guidance you need. Let Him be the One you turn to above all else, and everything else will fall into place.

You’re such a treasured friend to me, and I’m grateful for you. I pray that you feel God’s presence close to you today, and that He continues to guide you with His wisdom and love.

With love and prayers,

Master Nursi begins this topic with a very meaningful description of a human being. Man is the last and most comprehensive fruit of the tree of this universe, the most honorable guest of the palace of the universe, and It is a being with infinite purposes and desires and infinite enemies.

Here I will present to you a few psychotherapeutic elements that I have deduced from Master Nursi’s works as far as I can understand them.

“A person who sees the good in things has good thoughts. And he who has good thoughts receives pleasure from life.” Master Nursi

From the point of view of psychotherapy, this quote by Master Nursi points to the effect of positive thinking and perception on psychological health. “A person who sees the good in things has good thoughts” is about how the individual perceives the world. Our perceptions and the way we look at things affect the way we think. A positive perspective leads to more positive thoughts. This is a concept often emphasized in cognitive therapy. Replacing negative thought patterns with positive ones helps to achieve a healthier mental state.

The expression “he who has good thoughts receives pleasure from life.” emphasizes the impact of positive thinking on quality of life. In psychotherapy, it is accepted that there is a direct link between the way individuals think and their emotional state. Positive thoughts help a person to feel more satisfied with life and more emotionally balanced. This is a principle used especially in positive psychology and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches.

How can I use this in self-therapy?

Self-Evaluation and Using it for Development: This quote can be a guide on your journey of personal development. In therapy, you can review your perspective by asking yourself, “How am I looking at this situation? Can I see the good in it?” By encouraging positive thoughts, the quote can help you to handle difficulties in your life in a more positive way.

Strengthening the Emotion-Thought Connection: You can use this quote as a tool to understand how your thoughts affect your emotional state. You can gain awareness by remembering this quote to understand how the way you look at things in your life shapes your emotions. For example, practicing “seeing beautifully” can support emotional healing.

Focus on Positive Thinking: By remembering this quote, I can see how we see things is reflected in our thoughts and emotions. When I experience a negative event, I can help reshape my perspective by asking myself, “What can I see as good in this situation?”

Let’s take a look at what Master Nursi says here:

In everything, even in the things that seem ugliest, there is an aspect of true beauty. Yes, everything in the universe, every event, is either beautiful in itself or beautiful in terms of its consequences. There are some events that are ugly and obscure on the surface. But there are very bright beauties and regularities under that apparent veil.

Integrate with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Once you have recognized the “negative automatic thoughts” in yourself, you can use this phrase as a reminder. You can show yourself how looking at things from a more positive perspective can help change thought patterns. After catching a negative thought, you can encourage yourself to think more constructively by asking, “How can I see this situation from a different perspective?”

Mindfulness Exercises: By combining this with mindfulness exercises, you can learn to find the positive in the present moment. By inviting your mind and spirit to focus on the beauty around you during contemplation or mindfulness practices, you can cultivate positive thinking.

Reappraisal of Past Events: I can look again at negative experiences I have had in the past from the perspective of this saying. I can reevaluate events with questions such as “If I look at this situation from another perspective, can I see something beautiful?”

What I was trying to do here was to shed a light on my life with just a few aphorisms in the thousands of pages of Risale-i Nur Collection of my beloved therapist Master Nursi. Now I’m leaving the word to him again and I’m going to meet you in another article. Smile.

Yes, everyone sees the universe through his own mirror. Allah Almighty has created man as a yardstick, a balance for the universe. For each person, He has given a special world from this world. He shows the color of that realm according to the beliefs of that person’s heart. For example, a man who is very sad and mournful and weeps sees the universe as weeping and mournful; just as a man who is very joyful and cheerful and smiling with good news and joy sees the universe as cheerful and smiling.” Master Nursi

This article was inspired by Master Nursi’s work Risale- i Nur Corpus.

Master Nursi, a prominent theologian and philosopher, articulated profound thoughts that continue to resonate today. One of his notable quotes, “Goodwill is such a chemistry that it turns bottles into diamonds and soil into gold,” captures the essence of goodwill’s transformative nature. This statement serves not only as a metaphor for the power of kindness and positive intentions but also highlights the broader implications of goodwill in human relationships and societal interactions.

Understanding Goodwill

At its core, goodwill refers to the friendly, helpful, and cooperative disposition that individuals exhibit toward one another. It is the spirit of generosity, empathy, and understanding that fosters positive connections and produces a harmonious environment. Nursi’s quote suggests that goodwill possesses a unique ‘chemistry’—a transformative quality that can convert ordinary, even seemingly worthless, materials into something precious and valuable.

The Metaphor Explained

When Nursi speaks of turning “bottles into diamonds,” he implies that goodwill can elevate mundane or flawed aspects of life into something extraordinary. Bottles, which can be seen as symbols of simplicity or waste, represent the raw materials of our everyday experiences. In contrast, diamonds are the epitome of beauty, rarity, and value. This transformation highlights how positive intentions and actions can enhance the quality of our interactions and the environment around us.

Similarly, the phrase “soil into gold” suggests that goodwill can take the basic and often unremarkable elements of life—represented by soil—and elevate them to a state of richness and abundance. Soil is essential for growth and sustenance, yet it can also be overlooked. Goodwill nurtures relationships and communities, allowing them to flourish and yield benefits that may have seemed impossible without that positive catalyst.

The Chemistry of Goodwill

Nursi’s reference to “chemistry” is particularly significant. Chemistry involves the interactions between different substances, leading to the formation of new compounds with unique properties. In a similar manner, goodwill acts as a catalyst in human interactions, sparking change and fostering growth. When individuals approach each other with goodwill, it produces a positive feedback loop, encouraging collaboration, understanding, and mutual respect.

Goodwill can dissolve barriers, dispel negativity, and cultivate an atmosphere where collaboration and new ideas can flourish. It encourages people to work together toward common goals, fostering a sense of community and belonging. In personal relationships, goodwill promotes trust and loyalty, while in broader societal contexts, it can drive social progress and cohesion.

The Ripple Effect

The effects of goodwill extend far beyond the initial interactions. A single act of kindness can inspire others to follow suit, creating a ripple effect that transforms entire communities. When individuals see the positive outcomes of goodwill—be it improved relationships, enhanced cooperation, or increased happiness—they are more likely to engage in similar behaviors. This cumulative impact can lead to a societal shift toward more compassionate and empathetic interactions.

Moreover, in times of crisis or conflict, goodwill can be a powerful tool for healing and reconciliation. It encourages dialogue, understanding, and the willingness to find common ground. Nursi’s philosophy underscores that even in the face of adversity, goodwill can pave the way for constructive solutions and enduring peace.

Conclusion

Said Nursi’s quote, “Goodwill is such a chemistry that it turns bottles into diamonds and soil into gold,” serves as a reminder of the transformative power of positive intentions. In a world often marked by division and conflict, nurturing goodwill can lead to profound changes in our relationships, communities, and societies. By embracing this chemistry of goodwill, we can create an environment where individuals thrive, relationships flourish, and the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary. As we navigate our lives, let us remember the potential that goodwill holds and strive to embody it in our interactions, ultimately contributing to a more compassionate and harmonious world.

These nine important purposes, wisdom and obligations are briefly as follows:

1 – Human beings love life and find happiness by weighing and measuring the rich blessings that Allah sends us from the treasuries of His mercy with the rich feelings put into their being, and by realizing that Allah is the sole provider.

2 – By opening the hidden treasures of Allah’s beautiful names and recognizing Allah with those names, with the rich emotions attached to his own life, man solves the mystery of life and lives a contented life.

3 – Human beings are happy and at peace when they know and comprehend the subtle arts that each of Allah’s beautiful names has attached to them, and when they use these subtle arts to exert their influence and weight on other beings, to understand and proclaim Allah’s greatness, beauty and artistry.

4-Human beings spend their lives in comfort and peace by demonstrating their servitude to Allah as human beings, with their behavior, attitude, behavior, essence, words, and stance in the face of every positive and negative event.

5 – Just as a student equips himself with official clothes and carefully presents himself to the official officials of the state by attending the official parade, a human being finds peace and satisfaction by comprehending the names of Allah with the delicate subtleties and delicate feelings given to him, adorning himself with the unique arts required by each name, and presenting himself as an honorable servant to the sight of Allah, Who is Himself the Seer.

6 -Man adds meaning and pleasure to his life by seeing the beautiful posture of beings towards Allah, witnessing that the language of beings points to Allah, hearing the remembrance of Allah, seeing and evaluating that they listen to Allah’s commands and fulfill them completely, and consciously presenting the unconscious servitude of beings to Allah.

7 – The human being has been given a little knowledge, a little might, a little will, a little seeing, a little hearing, a little speaking, a little living, a little doing, a little building, a little inventing, a little loving, a little compassion, He is obliged to know Allah’s unlimited attributes of perfection, His holy states and His unique names with those little measurements by counting His attributes and states such as a little mercy, a little pity, a little forgiveness as a measure.

For example, a human being who builds a house in an orderly manner with his tiny power, knowledge and will, knows and recognizes his Creator, who is the master of this vast universe to the extent that it is bigger than his house, as powerful, mighty, knowledgeable, wise, willful, inventor and manager to that extent.

8 – By understanding the testimony of each of the creatures in their own language about the oneness and nurturing power of Allah, man understands the secrets of life and becomes happy.

9-Human beings need to understand the degrees of manifestation of Allah’s infinite power, infinite wealth and other unlimited attributes of perfection with their helplessness, poverty, neediness, weakness, deficiency, imperfection and other imperfect attributes. Just as the flavors and beauties of food are understood in the degree of hunger and need, man, with his infinite helplessness and infinite poverty, comprehends the infinite power and infinite richness of Allah.

O Most Merciful One, guide us to the secret of our existence! Make us grateful for our existence! Make us reach the wisdom of our existence!

Allah Almighty says that He has created the world and everything in it beautiful, but that it is temporary, that it should not be deceived, and that the real place to return to is Allah’s presence.

“The enjoyment of ˹worldly˺ desires—women, children, treasures of gold and silver, fine horses, cattle, and fertile land—has been made appealing to people. These are the pleasures of this worldly life, but with Allah is the finest destination.” Qur’an 3/14

THE WORLD HAS THREE FACES

Master Saîd Nursî reports that the world has three faces:

1- The first face of the world looks at the names of Allah Almighty. It shows the embroidery of Allah’s names. It is like a mirror of Allah’s names with its literal meaning, that is, with its body that shows others like a mirror. This face of the world is like the unlimited letters of Allah’s unlimited names; this face is very beautiful. It is not worthy of hatred; it is worthy of being loved to the degree of love. Because as this face of the world is loved, ultimately the names of Allah are loved.

2- The second face of the world looks towards the Hereafter. It is the field of the Hereafter. It is the nursery of Paradise. It is the flowerbed of mercy. This face of the world is as beautiful as the first face. Because everything planted on this face will bear fruit in the hereafter for eternity with Allah’s permission. Therefore, this face is also worthy of love, not contempt.

3- The third face of the world is the face that looks at human desires, is the face that is the veil of heedlessness and becomes the toy of the world. This face of the world is very ugly and very dangerous. Because it is mortal. Because it is annihilating. Because it is painful. Because it is sorrowful. Because it is deceptive. This is the face that the verses and hadiths draw attention to and warn against being deceived by its love. This is the face that should not be loved, the face that should be hated, the face from which one should seek refuge in Allah.

WHO DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD?

According to Bediuzzaman’s classification, four classes of people despise and dislike the world:

Recognizing Allah Almighty with His names and attributes

1- Ahl-i mârifet:( Recognizing Allah Almighty with His names and attributes) Ahl al-marifat do not love the world because it prevents them from knowing Allah Almighty deeply, knowing Him, loving Him, gaining His pleasure and worshipping Him.

2- People of the Hereafter: People who are fond of the blessings of the Hereafter, who prepare day and night for the Hereafter, who work for eternal life, are disturbed by some of the obligatory works of the world such as livelihood, children, food and work. Those who know about the Hereafter and are preparing for it, but are held back from the Hereafter because of the obligatory works of the world, see the world as ugly compared to the beauties of Paradise. Indeed, all the beauties of the world are nothing compared to the beauties of Paradise.

3- Ahl-i World: The third class of people who do not love the world is actually the people of the world. Some of the people of the world actually dislike the world because they cannot get their hands on it. But this dislike is not due to hatred of the world; it is due to love of the world and is not acceptable.

4- Ahl al-World: The fourth class of people who do not love the world is actually Ahl al-World. This part of the people of the world, on the other hand, seizes the world, finds the world laid at their feet with its yachts, coats, money and stamps, and lives the world to the fullest.

But to no avail; the world does not stop, it goes away. It takes him with it. He understands this and gets angry. Just to find solace, he says he hates the world. “It is dirty!” he says. But this dislike also comes from the love of the world.

The acceptable dislike of the world is the dislike of the first two classes, Ahl-i mârifet and Ahl-i âhirah

THE INSIDE OF THE HEART BELONGS TO GOD

Master Nursi states that loving the world as a field of the hereafter, a mirror of the names of Allah Almighty and a temporary guesthouse is a love that belongs to Allah Almighty, provided that the nafs-i emmâre does not interfere with it. In other words, according to Master Nursi, the world should not be loved because “How beautiful it is!” but because “How beautifully it was made and created!” and we should not allow love and affection other than Allah to enter our hearts, because the inside of the heart belongs to Allah.

Master Nursi heralds that the result of loving the world as the field of the hereafter and the mirror of Allah’s names is a permanent Paradise, which is as much as the world, but not as ephemeral as the mortal world.

This article is inspired by Master Nursi‘s Risalei Nur.

Can you imagine that we will never die in this world? Can you imagine that this limited world, which seems to be limitless in almost every aspect, with its problems of trials and questions that are difficult to solve, is a continuous life?

Hope is what keeps people alive. A hope that reaches tomorrow, where the troubles are over, where the test is over, where there is peace, where the invitation to “Come on, enter Paradise” comes.

Thinking about loving death from this perspective opens a separate and refreshing window. From the window that opens, keeping our feet here, looking forward and getting hopeful, making plans, getting energized, saying bismillah (in the name of Allah) with a new but fresh excitement.

A disease, an event, I don’t know, something that makes you very sad, extremely disturbed; would you want to live an eternal life with it, if you were given the will? I am sure you would say “No” with a strong reaction. What is the remedy for this anxious state, if not death?

In order not to rely too much on life in the direction of the advice “Die before you die”, the ancestors saw the mortal labels on things and events and did not put their hopes on it, but only saw it as a means, as a cause.

The human being, who is very fond of novelty and change, wants to get rid of the repetitive pages of this world, even if they go on forever because there is pain in them, and that is why death is understood as a blessing.

Every task that ends brings relief to the human being. Death is the end of the task of life. It is the expression that life, which is dependent on many things, and the heavy ties and burdens of the body are over. If the transition from plant life to animal life and then to human life is a stepping stone, death is a stepping stone from the life of this world to the life of the hereafter.

Just as the seed buried in the soil, which rots and changes in the visible world and gives rise to hyacinth, is instrumental in the beginning of a new life, death is the gateway to a life incomparably more magnificent than this one.

It is a blessing to even think that that period of life, such as old age, which is in some ways the harshest conditions of life, ends with death. And can you imagine that you have elderly people in your home who are so old that they don’t even know their age, and how heavy a responsibility you have to take care of them? From this point of view, isn’t death a mercy for them and for you?

When a person falls asleep, he cannot feel the troubles of the waking world, and even if he does, he feels very little of them. Death is the older brother of sleep. Death, which covers troubles and draws a veil over them, is worth loving from this point of view

A human being sets out by giving his most precious and cherished thing to someone he trusts. It is only through death that we can meet and be friends with Azrail (the angel of death), to whom we will entrust our most precious possession, such as the soul, on the journey to the hereafter. Loving him for the sake of our most precious possession and establishing a friendship with death, which brings us closer to him, should be the profit of people who think about their future.

No matter how much we talk about it, we should not forget that it is a greater blessing to be able to say, “Praise God, we are going to die” and to continue life here with consciousness and effort…

As Master Nursi says: “Death is a discharge from the duties of life; it is a rest, a change of residence, a change of existence; it is an invitation to an eternal life, a beginning, the introduction to an immortal life”

La hawla wala quwwata illa billah (There is no might nor power except with Allah.)

Master Nursi says that the blessed phrase “Lâ havla wa lâ quwwata illâ billâhi’l-Aliyyi’l-Azîm”, which we recite in our prayers, is a sentence like a medicine that refreshes people, to present to our Lord how weak and poor we are and to declare that there is no effect outside of His might and power.

Because human beings are inherently poor because they need everything in the universe. He needs eyes to see, ears to hear, hands to hold, feet to walk, air, water, and The sun to sustain his life, in short, he needs everything. No matter how materially rich he may be in the world, the human being, whose “needs are scattered all over the universe and whose desires extend to eternity”, is of course very poor.

For this reason, man feels the need to seek refuge in an infinite Mercy. Likewise, the fact that man is not able to do anything that he needs, that he requires, and that is necessary for him to continue his life, also shows the powerlessness of man. This infinite helplessness necessitates the need to rely on and seek refuge in an infinite Power.

Master Nursi draws attention to this truth in the following sentences: “Although there is an infinite weakness and an infinite poverty in man’s nature, he has an infinite need and an infinite demand. From this weakness and poverty, man needs asylum to a Qadîr (The Capable, The Powerful) and a Rahîm (The Bestower of Mercy).”

In another of his works, Master Nursi explains how man has unlimited ambitions and requires asylum to the sanctuary of an Absolute Powerful: “The human being needs and related to most of the universe. His needs are scattered all over the universe; his desires extend to eternity. As much as he wants a flower, he also wants a whole spring.

As he desires a garden, he desires the eternal Paradise. As he longs to see a friend, he also longs to see God. He is perfect and most beautiful in His essence, attributes, and actions. Just as he needs to open the door of another range to visit a loved one who is in another range, he needs to visit ninety-nine percent of his friends who have passed into eternity and to visit his ninety-nine percent of friends who have passed into eternity and to get rid of eternal separation, he needs to asylum to the lodge of an Absolute Powerful who will close the door of the whole world and open the door of the hereafter, which is an apocalypse, and who will remove the world and establish and put the hereafter in its place.”

In Risale-i Nur, Master Nursi mentions many sentences of prayer in the form of supplication and supplication in which he presents his situation to Allah Almighty. As a servant, he presents his needs and requirements to Allah Almighty, begs Him, and asks for His help. He reveals his weakness and poverty. He ends these sentences of supplication and supplication with the blessed words “La hawla wala quwwata illa billah”. It guides us on how we can express our weakness and poverty as a servant to our Lord.

It reminds us how we can express how helpless we are and how we should take refuge in our Lord.

Master Nursi states that the mention of the words “”La hawla wala quwwata” along with these supplications and prayers of supplication and supplication means that we are expressing our asylum to Allah Almighty and our trust in Him.

He explains that the word “La hawla” means that we realize that we cannot overcome our enemies with our own strength and that we take refuge in the infinite power of Allah Almighty, that is, we take refuge in Him.

Namely: The word “la hawla” (the real power belongs only to Allah) means “to appeal to the power of God by abandoning one’s own power as a point of reliance against one’s enemy”.

On the other hand, he explains that the word “La quwwata” means that we believe that only Allah Almighty can fulfill our unlimited wishes, desires, and needs and that we believe and trust in our hearts that He has an infinite power to fulfill all our needs, that is, we rely on Him. That is to say; “With the word “la kuvvete” (the real power belongs only to Allah), the absolute means (a definite means) of fulfilling one’s wishes and desires and needs is trusting in the Almighty with tawakkul (trusting in Allah and accepting Him as a surrogate).”

Let us now try to contemplate a few of Master Nursi’s sentences of supplication and supplication, the meaning of “an asylum to Allah Almighty” in the word “la hawla” and the meaning of “trust in Allah Almighty” in the word “la quwwata”.

Let us first consider one of the prayers of supplication and supplication in which infinite poverty is expressed. The prayer is as follows:

“Ya Ilahi wa ya Seyyidi wa ya Maliki!” (O my God and my Master and my Owner)

“My poverty is infinite. Although my needs and needs are incalculably many, the hand of my power and my will is too short to reach the least of those needs. Only You have the power and strength.

“O my Lord Most Merciful, O my Creator Most Merciful, Ya Hasîb (The Reckoner, The Sufficient), Ya Wakîl (The Trustee, The Disposer of Affairs), Ya Qâfi! (The Sufficient) “

We can divide this supplication into two parts, which contain the meaning of “an asylum to Allah Almighty” and “trust in Allah Almighty”.

The first part looks at the “asylum to the Almighty” which contains the meaning of the word “La havle”. If we pay attention, in the first part of the prayer, we confess that we have unlimited needs, but that we do not have the power to meet these needs, that we take refuge in the power of our Lord by expressing our helplessness and weakness, that we ask for His help and ask for help from His grace. In other words, we are “an asylum to the power of God”.

The second part looks at the position of “trusting in the power of God”, which contains the meaning of the word “La quwwata”. How does it look?

When we mention the first part of the prayer, the following questions will come to mind.

Will the One whom I beg to fulfill my unlimited needs have mercy on me?

Does He have the power to fulfill my requests and demands?

Is the One I am begging for abundant and all-sufficient?

Will the One to whom I make supplication answer me?

Can He meet all my needs?

In the second part of the prayer, we answer “Yes” to all such questions. Because I trust and rely on the One whom I beg to fulfill my unlimited needs to be “Merciful Lord ” and “Al- Kaviyy ( The All-Strong) “. Because I rely on Him to be the “Most Generous Creator” to whom I offer my request because I rely on Him to be “Al-Wakil (The Trustee, The Disposer of Affairs) ” who answers me.

Because I trust and rely on “Al-Kafi” who meets all the needs of His creatures and “Al-Hasîb” who sees and watches over all their needs. Thus, in the second part of our prayer’, we declare that we “rely on the Almighty” by mentioning the beautiful names and attributes of Allah Almighty related to the subject we are making a supplication for.

May Allah accept our supplications and supplications that we make by combining them with contemplation. May Allah include us in the group of servants whose share is high.

Human beings have been created differently with regard to their livelihoods. In consequence of this, God Almighty invites the rich to assist the poor, so that through the hunger experienced in fasting, they can truly understand the pains and hunger which the poor suffer. If there were no fasting, many self-indulgent rich would be unable to perceive just how grievous are hunger and poverty and how needy of compassion are those who suffer them.

Compassion for one’s fellow men is an essential part of true thankfulness. Whoever a person is, there will always be someone poorer than himself in some respect. He is enjoined to be compassionate towards such a person. If he were not himself compelled to suffer hunger, he would be unable to give the person – through compassion – the help and assistance he is obliged to offer. And even if he were able, it would be deficient, for he would not have truly experienced hunger himself.

Faith is such an elixir that it makes a person a friend and companion with the whole universe; it brings familiarity with everything. In the eyes of a believer with strong faith, every creature is Allah’s faithful servant and a friendly servant. Every part of the universe is adorned with conscious angels and spirit beings. This being the case, the believer should not suffer from boredom and loneliness in this world.

However, since these perfect meanings of faith are not fully manifested in every believer, he cannot fully comprehend these acquaintanceships and friendships. This is due to the weakness and weakness of faith. Therefore, the best and most important way is to strengthen our faith by transforming it into an authentic form.

Most of the spiritual and mental illnesses arise from weakness of faith and lack of worship. Just as the material body gets sick when it is deprived of food, our spiritual devices and emotions cause a number of spiritual diseases and troubles when they are deprived of dhikr and worship. The prescription for all spiritual illnesses and troubles is to attain true faith and to perform the worship that is necessary for this faith with perfection.

Master Nursi‘s description of the ideal happy believer is this

“He recognizes and approves Allah Almighty. In his eyes, this world is a house of remembrance of God, a training center for human beings and animals, and a testing ground for human beings. All deaths of animals and human beings are demobilization. Those who have finished their life’s work go from this world to another world without any distraction , so that there will be room for new duty bearers so that they can come and work. All the offspring of animals and human beings are to be recruited, to take up arms, to take up duty.

All living beings are active and happy soldiers, and they are happy and satisfied officials. All the sounds are either the dhikr and glorification at the beginning of the duty, the thanksgiving and praise at the end of the duty, or the melodies that arise from the joy of work. All existence, in the eyes of that believer, is a kind servant, a friendly servant, and a cute book of his Creator. Many more such sweet, sublime, and delicious truths are manifested and manifested from his faith”

Another cause of boredom is inertia and laziness. Inertia is one of the environments where the mind finds the most ways to sin and debauchery. In other words, if a person is not engaged in a beneficial and good occupation, he will surely be inclined towards bad things. Therefore, we should be constantly engaged in a good occupation without leaving ourselves idle.

“In fact, calmness and tranquility, inertia, uniformity, and hesitation are a kind of non-existence, they are harm. Movement and change are existence, it is good. Life finds its perfection through movement and advances through calamity.” Master Nursi

Stand up, take a small step, read a paragraph, say a prayer, walk for ten minutes

“The most miserable, the most troubled is the unemployed man. Because inertia is the brother of absence. Work is the life of the body and the wake of life.”
